| Most of us heard the expression that many people spend weeks planning their vacation, but they do not spend even one minute a day to plan their life. |
Most of us agree that's a very accurate remark.
But - most of us fail to do that, any way.
Yes, we know we should clearly specify our goals. Yes, we know we should put them in writing. Yes, we know this entire concept about goal setting - and we don't do anything to take advantage of this knowledge. We do not take it seriously. Our common response is "I have my goals in my head (mind). I know what to do". |
| OK, if you know, answer yourself: "How much did you move towards your goal? What will be your next step toward your goal?" Be honest - you do not know what the next step will be, because you did not take the first step yet, and you don't even know what the first step should be. |
| Yes, you're ready now to give me a long list of excuses, why you could not - or cannot - do something towards the realization of your dream or dreams. Before you start, let me tell you something. |
| In my country, Poland, nobody was telling us about achieving the dreams. Nobody was teaching us about setting the goals. They were rather trying to avoid the word "dream". The only goals we heard about were the goals of the Polish Socialistic Party - the only Polish political party. They were trying to teach us that their goals - the goals of "our" party - are our goals. The best ones for us, for the entire Polish nation, Polish country, the world, including you, Americans. We have been taught the entire world will realize soon that a socialism/communism is our bright future and a morning star of humanity. |
| Maybe you are tired of being constantly encouraged that "yes, you can", that "if I can do it, you can do it", that "if you believe you can do it, you can". |
In my country, nobody would say you that.
In my country, people did not have big dreams and plans. Was it forbidden to dream? It depends what kind of dream it was. If it was a dream about a freedom - you were in trouble. If it was one of the common human dreams - about a nice place to live in, good stuff to have, traveling, realizing yourself through your profession - they were doing everything to make sure you have no time - and energy - to even think about it. |
| Would you dream about a beautiful home, if to get the keys to the apartment where you could live on your own (not to own it) you had to wait ten-twenty years, in the meantime living in a tinny apartment with three or four generations of your family? |
| Would you dream about a beautiful, expensive car if very few could afford the only car available - a Polish small Fiat (smaller than Volkswagen Rabid - almost like a toy car), and to get it you had TO PAY IT OFF FIRST, then to wait a few years with your name on the waiting list before you finally got the keys to this Polish symbol of luxury? You couldn't even think about choosing the color; you were lucky if it wasn't black, because then it was looking even smaller. |
| Your job career? Forget about any ambitious plans, about creativity, leadership. You had to be just a working machine - not to think too much, not to talk too much - just to do your job. They decided about your career - if your political views were proper ones. You had to work on the position you got, in the same place. If you wanted to change a work place, you would loose so-called "job continuity" - number of years counted towards your retirement benefits. |
| In 1992, we went to Poland. A free Poland. For four years, we were teaching, coaching Polish people how to take advantage of the newly gained freedom. We asked them about their dreams. And you know what? We realized that they did not have any dreams. |
| They really did not? During a consultation, sometimes after a long time of a discrete encouragement, they bashfully admitted they would like to have this and that, to do so and so. They were afraid to say it even to themselves before. Why? Because they knew it could be left only in the world of dreams before. Then, in free Poland, they were so afraid that their dream would not get true, that they chose rather not to even think about it - they were afraid of a great disappointment. They also lacked any experience on reaching for anything. They were afraid they would be ridiculed by others. |
| You are in the country of the greatest opportunities. There are a few factors that very rarely - through the entire history of the humanity - were present together, at the same time, |
| First of all, you live in a free country - you have political freedom. You probably never even thought about it. Don't take it for granted - there are in the world many who pay the highest price for the freedom - their life |
| Then, you have a personal freedom. Nobody rules your life. The government doesn't tell you what you must do. You have your rights that are made by the people for the people. You may not like some of them - but could you imagine a situation where every single right satisfies every single person? |
| You have freedom of choice. You can choose who you want to be, what you want to do, what you want to have. There are countless opportunities that make it possible for you. Because you have economical freedom. You can make a career in corporate business, or in your own business. |
| You have a social freedom. There are not better and worse classes - everybody is equal, no matter what his background, ethnic origin, race, culture, religion, sex or age is. You are free to acquire the knowledge, to expand your potential, to shape a picture of yourself to become a person you want to be, to shape your destiny to live the life you dream about. |
| Don't look for excuses any more. Don't wait for the ideal situation when you can start it. Do it now. In this wonderful country, you have all the resources necessary. Also you have everything needed if you feel you need help: all the books - most of them available for free in libraries - lectures, courses, and seminars. |
